Technology

Vacuum-recovery sponge-media blast machine, developed to cut dust and improve both air quality and the working environment.

What is new about it

· The sponge media does not scatter far from the blasting area, so it is easy to recover and reuse.

· Sponge media costs more to buy than conventional abrasive, but because this process recovers and reuses it, the long-term running cost is lower — lower still once environmental impact and productivity are taken into account.

· An integrated recycling system sharply cuts the time spent on dust collection, waste handling and material handling during blasting.

· The process raises almost no dust. During prototype operation, airborne particulate was low enough that other work could carry on nearby.

· Unlike conventional sand blasting, the operator can see what they are doing, which improves quality, uniformity and consistency.

· Less airborne dust means a better and safer working environment for the operator.

· Recovering material and producing with lower carbon emissions contributes to cleaner air.

Overview

· Developed in response to the global demand for environmentally sound products, this machine recovers the abrasive used for surface preparation before painting in shipbuilding, offshore and onshore plant work — cutting airborne dust and allowing the media to be reused.

· Sponge media has a large particle size, which causes clogging and uneven discharge in conventional machines. This machine feeds it smoothly through a lead-screw feeder and an improved metering valve, with a purpose-developed nozzle that discharges it at a constant rate.

· It replaces conventional blast machines, which generate airborne dust and cannot reuse spent abrasive. The machine holds environmental certification and is supplied to large and small shipyards, ship repair yards and onshore plant contractors that need surface preparation before painting.

Advanced abrasive blasting

An advanced abrasive blasting process for removing rust from cast and machined parts and protecting them against corrosion.

It cleans off the rust and corrosion that appears while castings are being machined, without changing the dimensions of the surface. No rust-preventive oil is needed, and because it replaces manual polishing it shortens the process considerably.
